Unlikely Job

The position that would most likely be the worst for would be Account management.  The reason I say that is because like the book states, “you drive the bus”.  Although I feel that I am a leader, I do not feel like I have the personality traits to keep everyone accountable.  The job requires a sort of bully.  Someone who isn’t afraid to tell you how they feel and that you need to speed up or your going to be fired.  For management they must put the whole project together at the end.  All of the finishing touches with regards to work on time and organized is run through account management.

Account Management is like a coach telling the team what they have to do in order to make the client happy and successful.  This sounds like a great leadership position, but in reality it becomes focused on organization skills, and your ability to encourage people around you to get their work done on time.  Management is key to knowing what the client wants, needs, and how to approach it in the right manner.  The organization skills required for the position do not meet my personality and abilities to be successful at the position.  While meeting deadlines and managing the account, there is a level of enforcement and assertiveness that seems far too exhausting and unappealing to me.

Future Job

The job that fits me the best is Account planning.  I feel that this position is the best for me because of the lack of patterns.  Account planning isn’t a job that favors patterns and routines.  You are constantly finding new angles, new clients, new opinions, and meeting new people.  The book stated that it is less about organization and management but more about really thinking and solving problems.  I feel like this would be an excellent position for me because of that simple fact.  I can problem solve.

My intuition with people and my understanding of how they live would help me as an account planner.  I would be the middle between the business side of advertising and the creative.  The book states that planners go beyond advertising and are thinking of all aspects of brands, people, and life.  With a minor in sociology I can really understand different perspectives and the way that they can relate to a product or company.  The most appealing part about becoming an Account planner is that they are apart of almost every aspect of a campaign.  You have a huge opportunity to really influence what the brand says to the world.  Some of the most successful account planners have an originality about them.  They separate themselves from the business aspect of the account and see things most people do not see.  I am kind of a geek with good social skills like the book describes.  I am too analytical to be creative but not detailed enough to be a good account positions.  Account planning is exactly the right position for me in Advertising.

The Resume portion of the book seems extremely helpful for future interviews.  There were a lot of things I didn’t realize while making a resume.  One of the points that the author makes over an over again is to keep it short and concise.  It said to never make a resume over a page long, not under any circumstances.  Another point the author made that was helpful is to never use possessive speech.  NO I, my, our!  This is a lot more professional.  Another area that I changed was some of my high school accomplishments.  No one cares about your accomplishments in high school.  I think the biggest part of the chapter that surprised me was that you should avoid using long sentences with periods at the end.  Recruiters do not like to read and that’s why its so important to keep it short and concise.
